Afrika, recently re-released by MMP is a game originally designed and released by The Gamers. It is part of the Standard Combat Series (SCS) whereby knowing the basic rules of one game enable learning other games very easily. The game has monthly turns, mostly Brigade and Division size elements and covers from Cairo throught to South of Benghazi. I had initial
reservations on the monthly turn, I mean how can large armoured thrusts and counterattacks be accurately captured. I was pleasantly surprised to find the
armoured game enjoyable and the scale had the right feel. The supply is
handled with Supply Points (SP's) that are used in preventling units from being placed out of supply. A straight hex trace from SP to using unit would have been prefereable to the 5 MP it is now. This requires tracing MP from SP out the units, trying to get that right placement where maximum units can be covered. Play would have been speeded up with a straight hex distance. The designer has done the right thing to abstract out the effects of Malta, it makes for a much easier game. The game map and counters are all very well drafted, attractive and functional. I recall the MMP site mentioned there being 1 map, there is actually 2 maps, one being a smaller one. I would give it a 5 but for the extra counting of MP for SP points, 4.5 out of 5 is my verdict. Cheers, Kev
