“The Zero challenges me head to head, guns blazing. I return fire! BUT his bullets shred through the wings of my Hellcat. We pass each other, barely avoiding a collision.
NO! He’s damaged one of my right .50 guns. Bad news for me. I spot his plane again. He’s worse off.. it seems that he has a minor fire.” On the next turn, the minor fire develops into a major fire. The following turn, the Zero bursts into flames.
No, this is not a scene from a computer flight sim. This is Whistling Death from Clash of Arms games and JD Webster. Basically, ANYTHING that you can do in a WW2 aircraft, you can do in this game : Immelmans, Split-S, wing overs, even hammerheads. And so much more…. The damage model is excellent. There are games with pilots getting hit, wings blown off, fuel leaks that cause fires in following turns. Every aircraft also has their own characteristics. You can feel how difficult it is to out turn a Zero using a Wildcat.
Not for the fainthearted, though. The rules are fairly complex, but don’t let that turn you off. The support from fans and JD himself are excellent. This is via a yahoo group Fighting_Wings_Games@yahoogroups.com. Training sessions and tournaments are announced there. They are always happy to help out new recruits learn the rules.
If you are searching for a detailed realistic wargame of WW2 dogfights, this is the one to get!
